Aussie Pride In Aachen

How the Australian riders fared at the CHIO Aachen over the weekend. Saturday saw two of our Aussie dressage riders making their way into two of the competitions.  Both Brett and Hayley started in the CDIO Special as individuals, yet again amongst the toughest competitors in the Dressage world.  Hayley and Reli were first up and landed themselves in 24th place overall with a score of 65.708%.

Brett and Sam were the 20th pair to start and apart from an error in the changes, they did another super test that landed them in 13th place overall with 69.042%.  Enough to see Brett and Sam taking to the Deutsche Bank arena one last time for the CDIO Kur on Sunday morning.

"This was our first special, and I am very happy to be able to score 69% with mistakes.  The trot tour was really great but the uncharacteristic mistake in the rhythm of the piaffe came from him not being in front of the leg enough.  In hindsight, I think I should have warmed him up a little less.  5-10 minutes before we went in, in the warm up ring he really felt his best.  But overall, I am very happy and looking forward to the Kur tomorrow!“ Brett commented after the test.

Saturday evening it was Hayley’s turn again, this time in the CDI Kur with the big, impressive black mare Ferra.  With Ferra having had a bit of a anxiety in the arena on Wednesday, I was waiting with baited breath to see how she would go in the arena again, this time with 10,000 spectators packed into the stadiums, the loud music, the lights, and of course the hundreds of camera flashes.  Well, she was on fire! Again, Hayley did a super job to navigate them around their test and even though there was alot of adrenalin pumping, the quality of this combination was definitely visible. With just a little more time and experience under Ferra’s belt, she will be a star for the future! An awesome result for the pair, with a score of 66% landing them in 5th place and finishing off their Aachen competition for this year.

In other Aussie news, Clayton Fredericks was eliminated from the x-country when his mare Be My Guest failed to take off at a bank and ended up colliding rather nastily into it. Luckily, Clayton rolled onto the top of the bank and was okay.

Paul Tapner and his gelding Stormhill Michael ended up in 8th place in the individual competition.  This success follows after the pair were placed 10th at Badmington CCI****.

I was also very impressed at the grooming prowess of the eventers, showing their national pride for the Dressage. Stormhill Michael had a beautiful kangaroo quarter marker and Be My Guest had a southern cross.
