A New Record For The Little Ones

Australian Sports Pony Registry

2010 Victorian Pony Challenge – 31 July – 1 August
Werribee Park Equestrian Centre

Saturday Evening - The 6 Bar Show Jumping was an action packed and exciting inclusion with the gutsy riders and brave ponies, providing a few worrying moments for mums and other spectators.  Course Builder and ASPR President Vin Wyles said … “Do not forget to mention that the height of the final jump – 1.30 meters, sets a new record at our show!”  The 6 Bar was an ASPR Challenge highlight and this popular event shows the quality and versatility of Australian ponies … and they came in all shapes and sizes and many of them took part in the dressage as well.

The winner was Kapeta Kip, beautifully ridden by Ellen Sherwood who successfully defended her own and Kip’s 2009 title in this event. There were a number of notable combinations and the mighty Gresam Lodge Maximus ridden by Phillipa Mitchell were amazing, as Maximus is only 13.3 hands high and he cleared the final jump of 1.30 meters - making his height just slightly lower than the obstacle that he cleared.  Sadly he clipped the second last rail which cost him the lead and he had to settle for second place – he looked every bit the show pony, with his lovely clipped and glitter finished coat.

Third place in the 6 Bar ride off went to the paly gelding, Tilson Park Michael ridden by Eliza Mylon, who also showed great style and scope as a jumping rider.  Michael was brave and willing -  there was not a lot between the top three horses as it came down to the final round and the huge last jump which represented a herculean effort for any equine under 16 hands!

Another 6 Bar standout was the tiny 11 YO Emily Van Sonsbeek who capably rode the enormous and appropriately named Trojan Warrior.  Emily’s mount fought to the end as would be expected of his name sake and she kept him with her, every step of the various rounds of this event.

Brian Brennon kept the action flowing and the audience in touch with height changes and other facts – he was a wonderfully knowledgeable announcer.

The 6 Bar Showjumping event was a great crowd pleaser and gives the younger riders something to work towards for next year.  I was very impressed with the “can do” response from this group of ponies and felt that it was a great demonstration of the willingness and adaptability that we are looking for in a good all-round pony for a junior rider.
